1940 Willys Americar
The stylish cars and trucks produced by Willys in the early 1940s have long been cornerstones of the hot-rodding and drag racing communities. While a Hemi-powered ’40 Willys “Gasser” tearing up a local drag strip is an iconic image for any drag racing aficionado, the same sight might make a traditional marque enthusiast squirm. Whether in coupe or light-duty pickup form, the compact dimensions and light weight of the Willys “Americar” line lent themselves well to ‘rodders fitting massive V8 engines under the hood and going racing, but that popularity has made standard, unmodified examples an exceedingly rare sight today.

The Model 440 Coupe was introduced for the 1940 model year and was the only year to come with a 102” wheelbase. It was offered in two trim levels: the bare bones “Speedway” and the Deluxe. The Deluxe package, which had a retail price of $590 included a stylish front grille, an improved interior, and heater.

This Willys has been treated to an extraordinarily high-quality restoration. Its all-steel body is attractively finished in Commander blue and complemented by matching wheels and blackwall bias-ply tires for a classic look. The bright work throughout the car is in excellent condition, reflecting the meticulous attention to detail during the restoration process.

The interior has been attractively restored, featuring a bench seat reupholstered in light gray broadcloth, with the dash and door tops painted to match the body color. Though the cabin layout is simple, it has been carefully finished to highlight its charming, classic styling. The gauge cluster is positioned prominently in the center of the dash, surrounded by open space, creating a minimalist design that enhances its visibility for all occupants.

Willys relied on its tried-and-true “Super-Shift” inline-four engine to power the Americar line from 1933 to 1940. This 134.2 cubic-inch four-cylinder engine, rated at a modest 61 horsepower, is abundant in character. The engine bay of this car is meticulously detailed and dressed to match its original factory appearance. Power is delivered through a 3-speed manual gearbox with a floor shifter. Practical updates, including a 12-volt conversion and sealed beam headlights, enhance visibility and usability. It runs well and feels confidently sorted on the road, brimming with unique character and charm.

An unmodified 440 Coupe is an extremely rare sight today, making this 1940 Willys a remarkable survivor, restored to its original condition. With its exceptional restoration quality, iconic automotive influence, and timeless styling, this delightful Willys Coupe is sure to draw attention wherever it's shown and is a joy to drive to boot!
